This page explains what actually controls real-world bond strength — beyond the table.
A published number is a starting point, not a guarantee
A bond-strength range for "stiff clay" or "dense sand" is empirical design guidance tied to a particular ground condition and a particular grouting method — not a fixed material property the way concrete's compressive strength is. The installed micropile's actual capacity depends on whether the ground encountered matches what was assumed, and whether construction actually achieved the bond zone the design was based on.
What actually causes real bond to differ from the design assumption
- The ground itself differs from what the boring found. A single boring can miss a lens, a seam, a loose interval, or a change in groundwater a few feet away from where it was taken.
- Borehole condition. Sloughing, collapse, or debris left in the hole can prevent the grout from making sound contact with the intended formation.
- Installation method. Different drilling methods disturb and expose the ground differently — the method has to fit the formation, not just the schedule.
- Grout quality. Water-cement ratio, mixing, and placement all affect what actually ends up bonded to the ground.
- Groundwater. It can affect borehole stability, dilute grout, and change installation quality in ways a dry-condition design didn't anticipate.
Why grout strength isn't the same as bond strength
Stronger grout doesn't automatically mean a proportionally stronger bond to the ground. The limiting factor is often the soil itself, not the grout — a grout cube that tests strong in a lab says something about the grout, but not directly about how well it's bonded to the specific ground around it.
Common misconceptions
- "Bond strength is a fixed number for a given soil type." Published values are guidance tied to specific ground and installation conditions — actual performance still depends on what was encountered and how it was built.
- "A stronger grout means a stronger pile." Only if the ground can actually develop bond at that strength. Often the soil, not the grout, is the limiting factor.
How MFRC suggests homeowners think about it
Instead of asking "what's the bond strength for this soil," ask "how was that number confirmed for this specific site, not just assumed from a table?" A published range tells you what's plausible. Verification is what tells you what was actually achieved — which is exactly what testing exists to check.
