Normal Floor Deflection vs. Foundation Movement
A floor that is not perfectly level is one of the most common reasons a homeowner starts reading about foundation repair. It is also one of the easiest observations to misread.
Wood floors move. They were allowed to be a little out of level the day the house was finished. They bounce under a walking load. They can look worse than they are, and they can also be the first honest report that support has changed. The useful work is telling those situations apart.
What deflection is
Deflection is the temporary bend in a beam, joist, or slab under load. A person walking across a wood floor, a refrigerator in the middle of a span, or a gathering in one room can make a floor feel springy. When the load leaves, most of that bend comes back.
That is different from a floor that has taken a new shape and kept it. A joist that has dried, a post that has settled, or a slab that has lost support does not spring back when the room is empty.
What a sloped floor is not, by itself
Slope is a shape. It is not a diagnosis. Many houses were built with floors that were never dead level. Construction tolerance, long spans, and ordinary wood shrinkage after the house is closed in can leave a slope that has been there since the first winter.
A marble that rolls to one corner is a demonstration, not a measurement. It does not tell you when the slope started, whether it is changing, or what is carrying the load.
Ordinary reasons a floor is uneven
- The floor was built within tolerance and was never perfectly flat
- Joists and beams drying and shrinking after construction
- Expected bend in a long wood span under normal live load
- A crawlspace post or beam that has moved a little at one point, unrelated to the perimeter foundation
- Finish flooring laid over an already imperfect subfloor
When slope is more likely to be support-related
- The slope is new, or it has measurably changed over a known period
- One area is dropping while adjacent rooms stay put
- The same area also shows door-frame change, clustered cracking, or exterior movement
- There is a step or ridge at a known support line — a beam, a post, a grade beam — not a gentle dish across the whole room
- A moisture source, a void, or a drainage problem sits under the same part of the house
How to think about bounce versus tilt
Bounce that comes and goes with use is usually the floor framing doing its job, even if the feel is annoying. A floor that has taken a lasting tilt, especially when other signs cluster in the same zone, is asking a different question: did the support under that framing change?
Those two can exist in the same house. A bouncy span in one room does not explain a new slope in another.
What this page is not saying
It is not saying every sloped floor is harmless. It is not saying wood floors never report foundation movement. It is saying the first measurement that matters is change over time, not how dramatic the slope looks on the day someone first notices it.

A final note
This page is educational, not diagnostic. A floor that has looked the same for twenty years and a floor that changed this year are not the same problem, even if the marble rolls the same way in both rooms.
