Shrinkage, Curing, and Stress Relief in Residential Concrete

Shrinkage, curing, and stress relief sound like laboratory words. In a house they are usually why a slab or wall opened a line in year one and then stopped talking about it.

This page explains the sequence, why control joints exist, and why "it cracked after we moved in" is not automatically a soil story.

What curing actually is

Concrete doesn't dry the way paint dries. Cement reacts chemically with water — hydration — forming the hardened paste that gives concrete its strength. Curing is simply keeping enough moisture and a suitable temperature around the slab long enough for that reaction to keep going. If the surface dries out too fast while the interior is still reacting, the top wants to shrink while the inside is still soft. That mismatch is a common source of early surface cracking.

What shrinkage is doing

As water leaves the mix — through evaporation at the surface, or consumed by the ongoing chemical reaction — the concrete loses volume. If nothing held it back, it could shrink freely with no stress at all. But a slab is restrained: by friction against the ground underneath, by attached walls or footings, by reinforcing steel, by its own changes in thickness. Restrained shrinkage turns into tension, and concrete is weak in tension. Eventually it cracks to relieve that stress.

This can be designed for. A control joint is a planned weak point — a place where the slab is thinner or scored so a shrinkage crack forms there on purpose, in a straight, hidden line, instead of wherever the concrete happens to be weakest. A random crack is often the same physics, just without a planned location to land in.

Why the first year is noisy

  • Most drying shrinkage happens early — a meaningful share within the first weeks and months
  • Heat, wind, and dry air speed up surface drying and can cause cracking even before the slab has hardened
  • Interior finishes often go on while the concrete is still adjusting underneath them

A crack that opened at month three and looks the same at month eighteen is usually finished work, not something still happening.

What this does not automatically mean

  • The pour was defective
  • The soil collapsed
  • Reinforcing steel failed
  • Repair is required to "stop" shrinkage that has already finished

When shrinkage is the wrong explanation

  • The crack is offset, not just open
  • It keeps widening well after the first season or two
  • It matches a pattern of movement elsewhere in the house

How MFRC suggests homeowners think about it

Instead of asking "why did my new slab crack," ask "did it stop, or is it still moving?" Shrinkage is a process with a beginning and an end. A crack that finished early and stayed the same size is telling you the process is over. One that keeps changing years later is describing something else.
